Radyr Road / Hawthorn Road East, Alley Gating Update
Cardiff Council has been dealing with a request to consider gating the lane at Radyr Road / Hawthorn Road East and have completed a full assessment of this case against set criteria.
Through assessment the Council identified there were sufficient recorded incidents of crime and anti-social behaviour, indicating measures are needed to improve the situation.
Unfortunately gating is no longer an improvement the council can explore due to narrow entrances of the lane.
After considering the types of crime and antisocial behaviour that take place in the lane, the Council propose a lighting column to be the most suitable alternative method in line with Secure by Design principles. (Please see attached map)
Lighting columns have been used else where in the city where gating has not been possible and has made a significant impact on reducing the levels of crime and antisocial behaviour.
The street lighting engineers have a range of equipment to suit differing locations. Given the lighting column will be situated in the lane, the engineers will select a particular lamp head to ensure minimal light spillage.
